Happy Women’s Day

Today I'm honoring the women who've come before me. I'm honoring the women who are doing important work today. I'm honoring the women who have loved me and taught me, and the women who've loved and taught others. And I'm honoring all women, who are amazing just for existing. I hope we can continue to lift your voices for all to hear and honor. I hope we can create a world where all women are safe. Where all women have enough. Where all women are loved and cared for. Sending out love to each one of you....

Gratitude

"Express Gratitude. This is the most powerful tool you could be given. Gratitude can be a selected energy, and not merely an automatic response. When one actively chooses gratitude for everything presenting itself in one's life (and I do mean everything), it sets up an energetic signature that washes over and impacts the energy of whatever is now arising. This can transmogrify (defined as: "To transform, especially in a surprising or magical manner") the presentation itself- to say nothing of one's entire life." - Conversations with God, Book 4 Gratitude is a topic that is so important in healing, and one that I've grappled with. How can someone be grateful for the painful things? How can I be grateful when someone hurts me? Those are big and...

Going through the Tunnel

My two-year-old daughter has lately been surprisingly interested in watching videos of railroad handcars and railbikes. I’ll admit, they’re soothing and interesting (our favorite is this one). We’ve watched them after reading bedtime stories for the last few nights in a row. In one video, a man riding a railbike approaches and enters a very dark train tunnel. Approaching the tunnel looks a little scary – no light inside, and no telling where he will end up.  It’s a lot like birth. And a lot like major transformation. Tunnel moments in life are tough. These are the times when you can’t quite see ahead of you, can’t see behind you, and can’t leave the path you’re on. You are set on the path, it’s leading you somewhere-...

Who to Trust?

First and foremost, trust yourself. Trust your intuition, your mind, your feelings, and your experiences. That is an area I’ve struggled with since the beginning. I had a hard time trusting my own experience about what I went through as a child, and an equally hard time trusting my experience of God as a young adult. I wanted someone else to tell me what it all meant, because honestly, that is the world I was raised in. I was not raised to trust my own experience, but that of others, especially “experts.”  Other people are wonderful and can be great teachers and guides, but they are not you. You are here to learn about your own heart, and create your own world. You can learn what...

Staying Grounded

It’s taken a lot of work to help me learn how to stay grounded. When I was first traumatized, I survived by disassociating, or basically leaving my body. I didn’t know I was doing this until I began to do more in-depth healing work with bodywork and Reiki. Even therapy, which had many benefits, didn’t really help me too much to learn how to live in my body. In addition to being traumatized, I had some spiritual inclinations. Honestly I believe that these two things can go hand in hand. As one healer I worked with put it, “when the physical world doesn’t take care of you, the spiritual world does.” Or as the Bible says, “When you are weak, God is strong.” Both my trauma...

Healing without a Smart Phone

While this may only be a problem in certain corners of the world, I often wonder whether I would have had my beautiful healing experience of God if I’d had a smart phone. I had my experience in 2006, before iPhones were widely on the market. When I had quiet time, I had quiet time. I didn’t shove my face into a phone whenever I needed to relax. My experience came from a place of silence and connection to my heart.  I am very guilty of getting sucked into the rabbit hole of Instagram and online news like the New York Times. I really believe if I’d had a smart phone, I might not have found the silent place I did to allow me to have...

Trusting Your Experience

It’s been easy for me to fall into the trap of letting other people define my experiences for me, especially when it comes to defining my spirituality and God. When I first had my experience of God, I believed what other people told me about it, more than I believed my own experience. That’s been a big part of my path and a huge learning area for me. My experiences are mine - other people’s perspectives can be really helpful, but they can’t tell me what I feel, believe, or see. I spent a lot of time talking with a few trusted mentors about my experience. Looking back, I wish I had been brave enough to keep it to myself. I was too afraid that I...

Being OK with Change

It can be hard to change. When you are on a healing path, you may be called to change quite a bit from the person you were last year, last week, or even yesterday. As you move into greater alignment with your heart, you may also feel called to make changes to support your evolving vision of yourself. These changes may take the form of a new habit, or a new job, or a change in your relationship with another person. Over the years as I’ve healed, I’ve made so many changes in my life. Sometimes these changes made me feel embarrassed – what would other people think of me? I made some big changes in my career and also in my relationships. I’ve ended relationships...

Seeing the Good

Seeing the good in myself and others takes practice. I can tell I’m feeling good inside when I can see good things around me. On my most depressed days, I could see nothing good; not in myself, not in others, and not in the world. When I practice centering myself on my heart and in my breathing, I can create a feeling of peace, and open my eyes to see the good that’s in my life and in the world.  What about when there are so many difficult situations on our planet? Even when I am at my most peaceful, I still see these. The state of our environment is one aspect of our world that I’ve been consumed with thinking about and worrying about. I...

Starting Your Day

It’s helpful to start your day from a centered place. It can seem insurmountable- but it doesn’t have to be. If you have a lot of time in the morning, allot some of that time to a morning ritual that helps you remember who you are and why you’re here. If you don’t have a lot of time in the morning, just five minutes is enough. It doesn’t have to be long or complicated. It can be a simple prayer. In the mornings it’s very easy for me to slip into “stress mode” trying to get my daughter ready for school and get us both off to work and school. On those mornings an outsider looking in would see a hectic, stressful circus: my husband and...
