Caring for Others

“An awakened species sees the Unity of All Life and lives into it. Humans in an unawakened state often deny it or ignore it.” - Conversations with God, Book 4 I’m writing to you the day after the terrorist attacks in New Zealand which killed 49 Muslims. At Mosque. Praying during Friday prayers.  My heart aches for those who lost family members, and for the entire Muslim community.  How can we care for others during these times? I don’t know the best or the right way. I do know that I prayed and felt called to contact my Muslim friend in town and send apologies, love, and to tell her I supported her and her family. Even though I wasn’t...

Who to Trust?

First and foremost, trust yourself. Trust your intuition, your mind, your feelings, and your experiences. That is an area I’ve struggled with since the beginning. I had a hard time trusting my own experience about what I went through as a child, and an equally hard time trusting my experience of God as a young adult. I wanted someone else to tell me what it all meant, because honestly, that is the world I was raised in. I was not raised to trust my own experience, but that of others, especially “experts.”  Other people are wonderful and can be great teachers and guides, but they are not you. You are here to learn about your own heart, and create your own world. You can learn what...

Being OK with Change

It can be hard to change. When you are on a healing path, you may be called to change quite a bit from the person you were last year, last week, or even yesterday. As you move into greater alignment with your heart, you may also feel called to make changes to support your evolving vision of yourself. These changes may take the form of a new habit, or a new job, or a change in your relationship with another person. Over the years as I’ve healed, I’ve made so many changes in my life. Sometimes these changes made me feel embarrassed – what would other people think of me? I made some big changes in my career and also in my relationships. I’ve ended relationships...

Starting Your Day

It’s helpful to start your day from a centered place. It can seem insurmountable- but it doesn’t have to be. If you have a lot of time in the morning, allot some of that time to a morning ritual that helps you remember who you are and why you’re here. If you don’t have a lot of time in the morning, just five minutes is enough. It doesn’t have to be long or complicated. It can be a simple prayer. In the mornings it’s very easy for me to slip into “stress mode” trying to get my daughter ready for school and get us both off to work and school. On those mornings an outsider looking in would see a hectic, stressful circus: my husband and...

Experiencing Life through the Heart

When I began my journey towards healing, I didn’t know how I felt about anything. Experiencing childhood trauma, being raised in an intellectual home, and being in a society that valued the mental over the spiritual all combined to help me lose track of my feelings. I became very adept at navigating the world through my mind. That worked well for a while, until it didn’t. It took deep therapy and several breakdowns to help me access my feelings and learn who I was on the inside. It’s very easy to slip back into a purely mental approach to life. When I do that, I get headaches and think too much. I can have racing thoughts that feel hard to control. I try to solve problems...
